Dr. Dwight Thibodeaux
Dr. Thibodeaux received his undergraduate training at Louisiana State University (LSU), the University of New Orleans and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He obtained a Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Additional post-graduate training in ocular disease was received in Philadelphia at the Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr Thibodeaux also completed the anterior segment LASER certification program through the Northeastern University College of Optometry. Internships were located at the Indian Hospital in Shiprock NM and at the US Air Force Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO.
His three year tenure as Clinic Director of two medical and surgical eye centers in west Tennessee contributed to an extensive background in the treatment of eye diseases and ocular peri-surgical care. In 1990 he was one of three instructors offering the first post-graduate education course in LASER use by optometrists while serving as Assistant Professor at Southern College of Optometry. At SCO, he established both residency and internship programs in ocular disease at two separate locations in west Tennessee.
Dr. Thibodeaux has years of experience in external and retinal disease, specialty contact lenses for keratoconus, diabetic eye care, minor surgery of the eye and eyelids and the medical management of glaucoma. Having personally had laser vision correction, he provides in-depth consultations and perioperative care for these patients. He also works with those who have limited vision due to disease or injury. He has given many lectures and presentations on a wide variety of topics throughout his career. View several of those presentations here.
After obtaining licensure in 6 states, he became a member of the American Optometric Association and was honored as the Optometrist of the Year in both 2002 and 2007 by the New Mexico Optometric Association. Dr. Thibodeaux has served as the association’s liaison to the insurance industry and has lectured extensively on medical coding as well as medical and surgical eyecare. He has also served as clinical examiner for the New Mexico State Board of Optometry for many of the last 12 years.
Dr. Thibodeaux lives in Santa Fe with his wife Kim, and their multiple dogs. His outside interests include tennis, whitewater boating, downhill mountain biking and motorcycling. He has also donated his time and a number of medical instruments to the Wildlife Center in Espanola.
Dr. Paul Tachau
A native of Santa Fe, Dr. Tachau received his undergraduate training at New Mexico State University and completed his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon. He has maintained a private practice in Santa Fe since 1987. Additionally, Dr. Tachau has received post-graduate training in the use of therapeutic pharmaceutical agents, lasers, and minor surgical procedures of the eye and eye lids.
His ground breaking doctoral thesis in sports vision and his participation in a sports vision study of the 1984 Olympic Team give him an in depth knowledge as to how athletes use their visual system for excellence in sports. He served two terms as a board member for the New Mexico Optometric Association and is a 30 year member of the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Tachau blends his many years of optometric experience with his desire to fully address the particular visual challenges of each patient. Areas of interest include contact lenses, glaucoma, diabetes, low vision and sports vision.
Dr. Paul Tachau lives in Santa Fe with his wife Linda and their dog. He has two grown children – Jamey and Justin. He participates in a variety of outdoor activities including tennis, golf, skiing, cycling and hiking.
